하루 일곱번씩 주를 찬양하나이다Seven times a day I praise you! 재판과 선고26 그들이 예수님을 끌고 가다가 시골에서 올라오는 구레네 사람 시몬을 붙잡아 십자가를 지우고 예수님의 뒤를 따라가게 하였다.27 그리고 많은 사람들이 예수님을 뒤따라갔다. 그들 가운데는 예수님 때문에 슬퍼하며 우는 여자들도 있었다.28 예수님은 몸을 돌이켜 그들에게 이렇게 말씀하셨다. “예루살렘의 딸들아, 나를 위해 울지 말고 너희와 너희 자녀들을 위해 울어라.29 앞으로 사람들이 ‘임신하지 못하고 아기를 낳아 보지 못하고 젖을 먹여 보지 못한 여자들이 행복하다’ 하고 말할 때가 올 것이다.30 그때 사람들이 높은 산을 향해 ‘우리 위에 무너져라’ 할 것이며 낮은 산을 향해 ‘우리를 덮어라’ 할 것이다.31 푸른 나무와 같은 나도 이런 일을 당하는데 마른 나무와 같은 너희 유대인들이야 무슨 일인들 당하지 않겠느냐?”32 다른 두 죄수도 사형을 받기 위해 예수님과 함께 끌려갔다.33 그들이 ‘해골’ 이라는 곳에 이르렀을 때 군인들이 예수님을 십자가에 못박고 두 죄수도 못박았는데 하나는 예수님의 오른편에, 하나는 왼편에 매달았다.34 그때 예수님은 “아버지, 저 사람들을 용서해 주십시오. 저들은 자기들이 하는 일을 모르고 있습니다” 하고 말씀하셨다. 그들이 예수님의 옷을 제비 뽑자35 백성들은 서서 구경하고 유대인 지도자들도 예수님을 비웃으며 “그가 남을 구원하였으니 만일 하나님이 택하신 그리스도라면 자기도 구원하게 하라” 하였다.36 그리고 군인들도 다가와서 예수님을 조롱하고 신 포도주를 주면서37 “네가 유대인의 왕이라면 네 자신이나 구원하여라” 하였다.38 예수님의 머리 위에는 ‘이 사람은 유대인의 왕이다’ 라고 쓴 죄패가 붙어 있었다.39 함께 십자가에 달린 죄수 중 한 사람은 “당신이 그리스도가 아니오? 당신 자신과 우리를 구원하시오” 하며 예수님을 모욕하였으나40 다른 죄수는 그를 꾸짖으며 “너는 똑같이 사형 선고를 받고도 하나님을 두려워하지 않느냐?41 우리는 죄를 지었기 때문에 이런 벌을 받아도 싸지만 이분은 잘못한 것이 아무것도 없다” 하였다.42 그러고서 그가 “예수님, 당신의 나라에 들어가실 때 저를 기억해 주십시오” 하자43 예수님은 그에게 “내가 분명히 말하지만 오늘 네가 나와 함께 낙원에 있게 될 것이다” 하고 말씀하셨다.44 낮 12시쯤 되어 온 땅에 어두움이 뒤덮이더니 오후 3시까지 계속되었다.45 해가 빛을 잃었고 성전 휘장이 두 쪽으로 찢어졌다.46 그리고 예수님은 큰 소리로 “아버지, 내 영혼을 아버지 손에 맡깁니다” 하시고 숨을 거두셨다.47 이 광경을 지켜 보고 있던 장교는 하나님을 찬양하며 “이 사람은 정말 의로운 분이었구나!” 하였고48 구경하러 모인 사람들도 일어난 일을 보고 모두 가슴을 치며 돌아갔다.49 또 예수님을 아는 사람들과 갈릴리에서 예수님을 따라온 여자들도 멀리서 이 일을 지켜 보았다.Jesus Is Nailed to a Cross26 As the soldiers led Jesus away, they took hold of Simon. Simon was from Cyrene. He was on his way in from the country. They put a wooden cross on his shoulders. Then they made him carry it behind Jesus. 27 A large number of people followed Jesus. Some were women whose hearts were filled with sorrow. They cried loudly because of him. 28 Jesus turned and said to them, “Daughters of Jerusalem, do not weep for me. Weep for yourselves and for your children. 29 The time will come when you will say, ‘Blessed are the women who can’t have children! Blessed are those who never gave birth or nursed babies!’ 30 It is written,“ ‘The people will say to the mountains, “Fall on us!”They’ll say to the hills, “Cover us!” ’ (Hosea 10:8)31 People do these things when trees are green. So what will happen when trees are dry?”32 Two other men were also led out with Jesus to be killed. Both of them had broken the law. 33 The soldiers brought them to the place called the Skull. There they nailed Jesus to the cross. He hung between the two criminals. One was on his right and one was on his left. 34 Jesus said, “Father, forgive them. They don’t know what they are doing.” The soldiers divided up his clothes by casting lots.35 The people stood there watching. The rulers even made fun of Jesus. They said, “He saved others. Let him save himself if he is God’s Messiah, the Chosen One.” 36 The soldiers also came up and poked fun at him. They offered him wine vinegar. 37 They said, “If you are the king of the Jews, save yourself.” 38 A written sign had been placed above him. It read, This is the King of the Jews.39 One of the criminals hanging there made fun of Jesus. He said, “Aren’t you the Messiah? Save yourself! Save us!”40 But the other criminal scolded him. “Don’t you have any respect for God?” he said. “Remember, you are under the same sentence of death. 41 We are being punished fairly. We are getting just what our actions call for. But this man hasn’t done anything wrong.”42 Then he said, “Jesus, remember me when you come into your kingdom.” 43 Jesus answered him, “What I’m about to tell you is true. Today you will be with me in paradise.” 44 It was now about noon. Then darkness covered the whole land until three o’clock. 45 The sun had stopped shining. The temple curtain was torn in two. 46 Jesus called out in a loud voice, “Father, into your hands I commit my life.” After he said this, he took his last breath. 47 The Roman commander saw what had happened. He praised God and said, “Jesus was surely a man who did what was right.” 48 The people had gathered to watch this sight. When they saw what happened, they felt very sad. Then they went away. 49 But all those who knew Jesus stood not very far away, watching these things. 하루 일곱번씩 주를 찬양하나이다Seven times a day I praise you! 베드로가 주님을 부인함54 그들이 예수님을 잡아 대제사장의 집으로 끌고 들어가자 베드로도 멀찍이 뒤따라갔다.55 사람들이 뜰 한가운데 불을 피우고 둘러앉아 있을 때 베드로는 그들 틈에 끼어 앉았다.56 그때 여종 하나가 앉아서 불을 쬐고 있는 베드로를 유심히 보더니 “이 사람도 그와 한패예요” 하였다.57 그러나 베드로는 “이 여자야, 나는 그를 모른다” 하고 딱 잡아떼었다.58 조금 후에 또 어떤 사람이 베드로를 보고 “당신도 그들과 한패지요?” 하자 베드로는 “이 사람아, 나는 아니야” 하고 말하였다.59 한 시간쯤 지난 뒤 또 다른 사람이 “이 사람이 갈릴리 사람인 걸 보니 틀림없이 그들과 한패요” 하자60 베드로는 “여보시오, 나는 당신이 무슨 말을 하는지 도무지 모르겠소” 하고 대답하였다. 베드로의 말이 미처 끝나기도 전에 닭이 곧 울었다.61 주님께서 몸을 돌이켜 베드로를 보시자 그는 “오늘 밤 닭 울기 전에 네가 세 번이나 나를 모른다고 말할 것이다” 라고 하신 주님의 말씀이 생각나서62 밖으로 나가 한없이 울었다.63 예수님을 지키던 사람들은 그분을 조롱하고 때리며64 눈을 가리고 “너를 때리는 사람이 누구냐? 알아맞혀 보아라” 하면서65 예수님께 갖은 모욕을 다 하였다.66 날이 밝자 대제사장들과 율법학자들과 장로들이 의회를 열어 예수님을 의원들 앞에 세우고67 “네가 그리스도라면 우리에게 말하라” 하였다. 그래서 예수님은 이렇게 말씀하셨다. “내가 말하여도 너희가 믿지 않을 것이며68 내가 물어도 너희가 대답하지 않을 것이다.69 그러나 이제부터는 내가 전능하신 하나님의 오른편에 앉을 것이다.”70 “그렇다면 네가 하나님의 아들이냐?” 하고 그들이 묻자 예수님은 “그렇다” 하고 대답하셨다.71 그러자 그들은 “이 이상 무슨 증거가 더 필요하겠는가? 우리는 이 사람이 직접 하는 말을 다 들었다” 하고 외쳤다.Peter Says He Does Not Know Jesus54 Then the men arrested Jesus and led him away. They took him into the high priest’s house. Peter followed from far away. 55 Some people there started a fire in the middle of the courtyard. Then they sat down together. Peter sat down with them. 56 A female servant saw him sitting there in the firelight. She looked closely at him. Then she said, “This man was with Jesus.”57 But Peter said he had not been with him. “Woman, I don’t know him,” he said.58 A little later someone else saw Peter. “You also are one of them,” he said.“No,” Peter replied. “I’m not!”59 About an hour later, another person spoke up. “This fellow must have been with Jesus,” he said. “He is from Galilee.”60 Peter replied, “Man, I don’t know what you’re talking about!” Just as he was speaking, the rooster crowed. 61 The Lord turned and looked right at Peter. Then Peter remembered what the Lord had spoken to him. “The rooster will crow today,” Jesus had said. “Before it does, you will say three times that you don’t know me.” 62 Peter went outside. He broke down and cried.The Guards Make Fun of Jesus63 There were men guarding Jesus. They began laughing at him and beating him. 64 They blindfolded him. They said, “Prophesy! Who hit you?” 65 They also said many other things to make fun of him.Jesus Is Brought to Pilate and Herod66 At dawn the elders of the people met together. These included the chief priests and the teachers of the law. Jesus was led to them. 67 “If you are the Messiah,” they said, “tell us.”Jesus answered, “If I tell you, you will not believe me. 68 And if I asked you, you would not answer. 69 But from now on, the Son of Man will be seated at the right hand of the mighty God.”70 They all asked, “Are you the Son of God then?”He replied, “You say that I am.”71 Then they said, “Why do we need any more witnesses? 하루 일곱번씩 주를 찬양하나이다Seven times a day I praise you! 예수님이 체포되심39 예수님이 습관대로 감람산에 가시자 제자들도 따라갔다.40 예수님은 그 곳에 도착하셔서 제자들에게 “시험에 들지 않게 기도하라” 하시고41 그들을 떠나 돌을 던지면 닿을 정도 떨어진 곳으로 가셔서 무릎을 꿇고 이렇게 기도하셨다.42 “아버지, 아버지께서 원하신다면 이 고난의 잔을 내게서 거두어 주십시오. 그러나 내 뜻대로 마시고 아버지의 뜻대로 하십시오.”43 그러자 한 천사가 하늘에서 나타나 예수님께 힘을 북돋아 주었다.44 예수님이 괴로워 몸부림치시며 더욱 간절히 기도하시자 땀이 핏방울같이 되어 땅에 떨어졌다.45 예수님은 기도하시던 자리에서 일어나 제자들에게 돌아가 그들이 슬픔에 지쳐 잠든 것을 보시고46 “왜 잠만 자느냐? 시험에 들지 않도록 일어나 기도하여라” 하고 말씀하셨다.47 예수님의 말씀이 미처 끝나기도 전에 한 떼의 군중이 열두 제자 중 하나인 유다를 앞세우고 나타났다. 유다가 예수님께 가까이 와서 입을 맞추려고 하였으나48 예수님은 그에게 “유다야, 네가 입맞춤으로 나를 파느냐?” 하고 말씀하셨다.49 함께 있던 제자들은 되어가는 일을 보고 예수님께 “주님, 칼로 쳐 버릴까요?” 하고 물었다.50 그러고는 그들 중 한 사람이 대제사장의 종의 오른쪽 귀를 쳐서 잘라 버렸다.51 그러나 예수님은 “그만두어라. 이만하면 됐다” 하시고 그 사람의 귀를 만져 고쳐 주셨다.52 그리고 예수님은 자기를 잡으러 온 대제사장들과 성전 경비병들과 장로들에게 말씀하셨다. “내가 마치 강도라도 되는 것처럼 너희가 칼과 몽둥이를 들고 나왔느냐?53 내가 날마다 너희와 함께 성전에 있을 때는 너희가 나를 잡지 않았다. 그러나 이제는 너희 때이며 어두움의 권세가 기세를 부릴 때이다.”Jesus Prays on the Mount of Olives39 Jesus went out as usual to the Mount of Olives. His disciples followed him. 40 When they reached the place, Jesus spoke. “Pray that you won’t fall into sin when you are tempted,” he said to them. 41 Then he went a short distance away from them. There he got down on his knees and prayed. 42 He said, “Father, if you are willing, take this cup of suffering away from me. But do what you want, not what I want.” 43 An angel from heaven appeared to Jesus and gave him strength. 44 Because he was very sad and troubled, he prayed even harder. His sweat was like drops of blood falling to the ground.45 After that, he got up from prayer and went back to the disciples. He found them sleeping. They were worn out because they were very sad. 46 “Why are you sleeping?” he asked them. “Get up! Pray that you won’t fall into sin when you are tempted.”Jesus Is Arrested47 While Jesus was still speaking, a crowd came up. The man named Judas was leading them. He was one of the 12 disciples. Judas approached Jesus to kiss him. 48 But Jesus asked him, “Judas, are you handing over the Son of Man with a kiss?”49 Jesus’ followers saw what was going to happen. So they said, “Lord, should we use our swords against them?” 50 One of them struck the slave of the high priest and cut off his right ear.51 But Jesus answered, “Stop this!” And he touched the man’s ear and healed him.52 Then Jesus spoke to the chief priests, the officers of the temple guard, and the elders. They had all come for him. “Am I leading a band of armed men against you?” he asked. “Do you have to come with swords and clubs? 53 Every day I was with you in the temple courtyard. And you didn’t lay a hand on me. But this is your hour. He felt deep shame and sadness for what he had done. 하루 일곱번씩 주를 찬양하나이다Seven times a day I praise you! 최후의 만찬14 시간이 되자 예수님은 사도들과 함께 식탁에 앉으시고15 그들에게 이렇게 말씀하셨다. “내가 고난을 당하기 전에 너희와 함께 이 유월절 음식 먹기를 무척 원하였다.16 내가 너희에게 말하지만 유월절의 의미가 하나님의 나라에서 성취될 때까지 내가 다시는 이 음식을 먹지 않을 것이다.”17 그러고서 예수님은 잔을 들어 감사 기도를 드리신 후 말씀하셨다. “너희는 이것을 가져다가 너희끼리 나누어 마셔라.18 나는 이제부터 하나님의 나라가 올 때까지 포도나무에서 난 것을 다시 마시지 않을 것이다.”19 예수님은 또 빵을 들어 감사 기도를 드리고 떼어서 제자들에게 주시며 “이것은 너희를 위해 주는 내 몸이다. 너희는 이것을 행하여 나를 기념하라” 하고 말씀하셨다.20 그리고 예수님은 저녁을 잡수신 후에 마찬가지로 잔을 들고 이렇게 말씀하셨다. “이 잔은 너희를 위해 흘릴 내 피로 세우는 새 계약이다.21 그러나 나를 파는 사람의 손이 내 손과 함께 식탁 위에 있다.22나는 하나님이 정하신 대로 죽지만 나를 파는 사람에게는 불행이 닥칠 것이다.”23 그러자 제자들은 그들 가운데 이런 짓을 할 사람이 누구겠느냐고 서로 물었다.24 제자들 사이에 누가 가장 위대하냐고 하는 문제로 말다툼이 생겼다.25 그래서 예수님이 그들에게 말씀하셨다. “세상의 왕들은 권력으로 자기 백성을 다스리고 직권을 행사하는 사람들은 자기들을 ‘은인’ 이라고 부른다.26 그러나 너희는 그렇게 해서는 안 된다. 너희 가운데 가장 나은 사람은 제일 나이 어린 사람과 같아야 하고 지도자는 종과 같아야 한다.27 식탁에 앉아서 먹는 사람과 심부름하는 사람 중에 누가 더 지위가 높으냐? 식탁에 앉아 먹는 사람이 아니냐? 그러나 나는 섬기는 자로 너희 가운데 있다.28 너희가 항상 나와 같이 있으면서 내가 당한 시험을 함께 받았으므로29 내 아버지께서 내게 나라를 주신 것처럼 나도 너희에게 나라를 주어30 너희가 내 나라에서 내 식탁에 앉아 먹고 마시며 보좌에 앉아 이스라엘의 열두 지파를 다스리게 하겠다.31 “시몬아, 시몬아, 사탄이 너희를 밀 까부르듯 하겠다고 요구하였다.32 그러나 네 믿음이 완전히 사라지지 않도록 내가 너를 위해 기도하였다. 너는 뉘우치고 돌아온 후에 네 형제들을 굳세게 하여라.”33 그때 베드로가 “주님, 나는 주님과 함께 감옥에도, 사형장에도 갈 준비가 되어 있습니다” 하자34 예수님은 “베드로야, 내가 분명히 너에게 말하지만 오늘 밤 닭 울기 전에 네가 세 번이나 나를 모른다고 말할 것이다” 하고 말씀하셨다.The Last Supper14 When the hour came, Jesus and his apostles took their places at the table. 15 He said to them, “I have really looked forward to eating this Passover meal with you. I wanted to do this before I suffer. 16 I tell you, I will not eat the Passover meal again until it is celebrated in God’s kingdom.”17 After Jesus took the cup, he gave thanks. He said, “Take this cup and share it among yourselves. 18 I tell you, I will not drink wine with you again until God’s kingdom comes.”19 Then Jesus took bread. He gave thanks and broke it. He handed it to them and said, “This is my body. It is given for you. Every time you eat it, do this in memory of me.”20 In the same way, after the supper he took the cup. He said, “This cup is the new covenant in my blood. It is poured out for you. 21 But someone here is going to hand me over to my enemies. His hand is with mine on the table. 22 The Son of Man will go to his death, just as God has already decided. But how terrible it will be for the one who hands him over!” 23 The apostles began to ask one another about this. They wondered which one of them would do it.24 They also started to argue. They disagreed about which of them was thought to be the most important person. 25 Jesus said to them, “The kings of the Gentiles hold power over their people. And those who order them around call themselves Protectors. 26 But you must not be like that. Instead, the most important among you should be like the youngest. The one who rules should be like the one who serves. 27 Who is more important? Is it the one at the table, or the one who serves? Isn’t it the one who is at the table? But I am among you as one who serves. 28 You have stood by me during my troubles. 29 And I give you a kingdom, just as my Father gave me a kingdom. 30 Then you will eat and drink at my table in my kingdom. And you will sit on thrones, judging the 12 tribes of Israel.31 “Simon, Simon! Satan has asked to sift all of you disciples like wheat. 32 But I have prayed for you, Simon. I have prayed that your faith will not fail. When you have turned back, help your brothers to be strong.”33 But Simon replied, “Lord, I am ready to go with you to prison and to death.”34Jesus answered, “I tell you, Peter, you will say three times that you don’t know me. 하루 일곱번씩 주를 찬양하나이다Seven times a day I praise you! 예수님을 죽이려는 음모1 누룩 넣지 않은 빵을 먹는 명절인 유월절이 다가왔다.2 대제사장들과 율법학자들은 백성들을 두려워하여 어떻게 하면 예수님을 아무 탈없이 죽일 수 있을까 하고 의논하고 있었다.3 그때 열두 제자 중 하나인 가룟 유다에게 사탄이 들어갔다.4 유다가 대제사장들과 성전 경비병들에게 가서 예수님을 팔아 넘길 방법을 의논하자5 그들이 기뻐하며 돈을 주기로 약속하였다.6 그래서 유다는 그들의 뜻에 따르기로 하고 사람들이 없을 때 예수님을 넘겨 줄 기회를 찾기 시작했다.7 누룩 넣지 않은 빵을 먹는 명절인 무교절이 되었는데 이 날은 유월절에 쓸 어린 양을 잡는 날이었다.8 예수님은 베드로와 요한을 보내시며 “가서 우리가 먹을 유월절 음식을 준비하여라” 하셨다.9 그들이 “어디다 마련할까요?” 하고 묻자10 예수님은 이렇게 말씀하셨다. “성 안에 들어가면 물통을 가지고 가는 사람을 만날 것이다. 그가 들어가는 집으로 따라 들어가거라.11 그리고 그 집 주인에게 ‘우리 선생님이 제자들과 함께 유월절 음식을 먹을 방을 알아보라고 하셨습니다’ 하여라.12 그러면 잘 준비된 이층 넓은 방으로 안내할 것이다. 거기서 준비하도록 하라.”13 제자들이 가 보니 예수님이 말씀 하신 그대로였다. 그래서 그들은 거기서 유월절 음식을 준비하였다.Judas Agrees to Hand Jesus Over1 The Feast of Unleavened Bread, called the Passover, was near. 2 The chief priests and the teachers of the law were looking for a way to get rid of Jesus. They were afraid of the people. 3 Then Satan entered Judas, who was called Iscariot. Judas was one of the 12 disciples. 4 He went to the chief priests and the officers of the temple guard. He talked with them about how he could hand Jesus over to them. 5 They were delighted and agreed to give him money. 6 Judas accepted their offer. He watched for the right time to hand Jesus over to them. He wanted to do it when no crowd was around.The Last Supper7 Then the day of Unleavened Bread came. That was the time the Passover lamb had to be sacrificed. 8 Jesus sent Peter and John on ahead. “Go,” he told them. “Prepare for us to eat the Passover meal.”9 “Where do you want us to prepare for it?” they asked.10 Jesus replied, “When you enter the city, a man carrying a jar of water will meet you. Follow him to the house he enters. 11 Then say to the owner of the house, ‘The Teacher asks, “Where is the guest room? Where can I eat the Passover meal with my disciples?” ’ 12 He will show you a large upstairs room with furniture already in it. Prepare for us to eat there.”13 Peter and John left. 하루 일곱번씩 주를 찬양하나이다Seven times a day I praise you! 야곱이 벧엘로 돌아감1 하나님이 야곱에게 말씀하셨다. “너는 벧엘로 올라가서 거기 정착하여 네가 네 형 에서를 피해 도망하던 때에 너에게 나타났던 나 하나님에게 단을 쌓아라.”2 그래서 야곱은 가족들과 그리고 자기와 함께 있는 모든 사람들에게 말하였다. “너희는 외국인의 신들을 버리고 자신을 정결하게 하며 의복을 갈아 입어라.3 자, 일어나 벧엘로 올라가자. 내가 어려움을 당할 때 내 기도를 들어주시고 내가 가는 곳마다 나와 함께하신 하나님께 내가 거기서 단을 쌓으려고 한다.”4 그들이 가지고 있던 외국인의 우상과 귀에 달고 있던 고리를 빼어 야곱에게 주자 야곱이 그것들을 세겜 근처에 있는 상수리나무 아래에 묻었다.5 그러고서 그들이 그 곳을 떠났으나 하나님에 대한 두려움이 그들 주변의 모든 성에 엄습하므로 그들을 추격하는 자가 아무도 없었다.6 드디어 야곱과 그 일행은 가나안 땅의 루스 곧 벧엘에 도착하였다.7 거기서 야곱은 단을 쌓고 그 곳을 '엘 – 벧엘' 이라 불렀는데 이것은 그가 형을 피해 도망할 때 하나님이 거기서 그에게 나타나셨기 때문이었다.8 이 무렵 리브가의 유모 드보라가 죽어 벧엘 아랫지방 상수리나무 밑에 장사되었으며 그때부터 그 나무 이름을  '알론 – 바굿' 이라 하였다.9 야곱이 메소포타미아에서 돌아왔을 때 하나님이 그에게 다시 나타나셔서 그를 축복하시고10 “네 이름이 야곱이지만 이제부터는 이스라엘이 될 것이다” 하시며 그를 이스라엘이라고 부르셨다.11 그러고서 하나님은 그에게 말씀하셨다. “나는 전능한 하나님이다. 너는 많은 자녀를 낳고 번성하라. 너는 많은 민족의 조상이 될 것이며 네 후손 가운데서 여러 왕들이 나올 것이다.12 내가 아브라함과 이삭에게 준 땅을 너에게 주고 그 후에는 네 후손들에게 그 땅을 주겠다.”13 그리고 하나님은 그 곳을 떠나셨다.14 그래서 야곱은 하나님이 자기와 말씀하시던 곳에 돌기둥을 세우고 그 위에 포도주와 기름을 부어 성별하고15 그 곳을 벧엘이라고 불렀다.Jacob Returns to Bethel1 Then God said to Jacob, “Go up to Bethel and settle there, and build an altar there to God, who appeared to you when you were fleeing from your brother Esau.”2 So Jacob said to his household and to all who were with him, “Get rid of the foreign gods you have with you, and purify yourselves and change your clothes. 3 Then come, let us go up to Bethel, where I will build an altar to God, who answered me in the day of my distress and who has been with me wherever I have gone.” 4 So they gave Jacob all the foreign gods they had and the rings in their ears, and Jacob buried them under the oak at Shechem. 5 Then they set out, and the terror of God fell on the towns all around them so that no one pursued them.6 Jacob and all the people with him came to Luz (that is, Bethel) in the land of Canaan. 7 There he built an altar, and he called the place El Bethel, because it was there that God revealed himself to him when he was fleeing from his brother.8 Now Deborah, Rebekah’s nurse, died and was buried under the oak outside Bethel. So it was named Allon Bakuth.9 After Jacob returned from Paddan Aram, God appeared to him again and blessed him. 10 God said to him, “Your name is Jacob, but you will no longer be called Jacob; your name will be Israel.” So he named him Israel.11 And God said to him, “I am God Almighty; be fruitful and increase in number.
