하루 일곱번씩 주를 찬양하나이다Seven times a day I praise you! 23 이삭은 거기서 브엘세바로 올라갔다.24 그런데 그 날 밤 여호와께서 그에게 나타나 말씀하셨다. “나는 네 아버지 아브라함의 하나님이다. 너는 두려워하지 말아라. 내 종 아브라함을 생각해서 내가 너와 함께하여 너를 축복하고 네 자손을 번성하게 하겠다.”25 그래서 이삭은 그 곳에 단을 쌓아 여호와께 경배하고 거기에 천막을 쳤으며 그의 종들은 거기서도 우물을 팠다.26 이때 그랄에서 아비멜렉이 그의 고문 아훗삿과 군사령관 비골과 함께 이삭을 찾아왔다.27 이삭이 그들에게 “당신들은 나를 미워하여 쫓아내고서 무슨 일로 나를 찾아왔소?” 하고 묻자28 그들이 이렇게 대답하였다. “우리는 여호와께서 당신과 함께 계시는 것을 분명히 보았소. 그래서 우리가 당신과 계약을 맺는 것이 필요하다고 생각하였소. 이제 당신과 우리 사이에 계약을 맺읍시다.29 우리가 당신을 해하지 않고 당신에게 친절을 베풀어 평안히 가게 한 것처럼 당신도 우리를 해하지 않겠다고 약속하시오. 당신은 여호와께 복을 받은 사람이오.”30 이삭은 그들을 위해 잔치를 베풀었다. 그들은 먹고 마시고31 다음날 아침 일찍 일어나 서로 계약을 지키기로 맹세하였다. 그러고서 이삭이 그들을 보내자 그들은 평안히 떠났다.32 바로 그 날 이삭의 종들이 와서 자기들이 판 우물에 대하여 이야기하며 “우리가 물을 찾아냈습니다” 하였다.33 이삭이 그 우물의 이름을 맹세란 뜻으로 ‘세바’ 라고 지었으므로 그 곳 성 이름이 맹세의 우물 곧 브엘세바가 되었다.34 에서는 40세에 헷족의 두 여자와 결혼했는데 그들은 브에리의 딸 유딧과 엘론의 딸 바스맛이었다.35 그러나 그들은 이삭과 리브가의 마음에 근심이 되었다.23 From there Isaac went up to Beersheba. 24 That night the Lord appeared to him. He said, “I am the God of your father Abraham. Do not be afraid. I am with you. I will bless you. I will increase the number of your children because of my servant Abraham.”25 Isaac built an altar there and worshiped the Lord. There he set up his tent. And there his servants dug a well.26 During that time, Abimelek had come to him from Gerar. His personal adviser, Ahuzzath, had come with him. So had his army commander, Phicol. 27 Isaac asked them, “Why have you come to me? You were angry with me and sent me away.”28 They answered, “We saw clearly that the Lord was with you. So we said, ‘There should be an agreement between us and you.’ We want to make a peace treaty with you. 29 Give us your word that you won’t harm us. We didn’t harm you. We always treated you well. We sent you away peacefully. And now the Lord has blessed you.”30 Then Isaac had a feast prepared for them. They ate and drank. 31 Early the next morning the men made a treaty with each other. Then Isaac sent the men of Gerar on their way. And they left peacefully.32 That day Isaac’s servants came to him. They told him about the well they had dug. They said, “We’ve found water!” 33 So he named it Shibah. To this day the name of the town has been Beersheba.Jacob Takes Esau’s Blessing34 When Esau was 40 years old, he got married to Judith. She was the daughter of Beeri the Hittite. Esau also married Basemath. 하루 일곱번씩 주를 찬양하나이다Seven times a day I praise you! 12 이삭은 그 땅에 농사를 지었다. 여호와께서 축복하시므로 그 해에 백 배의 결실을 얻었고13 점점 번창하여 마침내 큰 부자가 되었다.14 그에게 양과 소와 종들이 많아지자 블레셋 사람들이 그를 시기하여15 아브라함이 살아 있을 당시 그의 아버지 아브라함의 종들이 판 우물들을 모조리 흙으로 메워 버렸다.16 이때 아비멜렉이 이삭에게 “당신은 우리에게 너무 강력한 사람이 되었소. 이제 우리를 떠나시오” 하였다.17 그래서 이삭은 그 곳을 떠나 그랄 골짜기에 천막을 치고 거기에 정착하여18 그의 아버지 아브라함 때에 팠던 우물들을 다시 팠는데 이것들은 아브라함이 죽은 후에 블레셋 사람들이 막은 우물들이었다. 이삭은 그 우물들의 이름을 자기 아버지가 부르던 대로 불렀다.19 이삭의 종들이 골짜기에 우물을 파서 샘의 물줄기를 찾았으나20 그랄의 목자들이 이삭의 목자들과 다투며 “이 우물은 우리 것이다” 하고 주장하였다. 그래서 이삭은 그 우물 이름을 '다툼의 우물' 이라고 지었다.21 이삭의 종들은 또 다른 우물을 팠다. 그랄의 목자들이 그것도 자기들 것이라고 우기므로 이삭은 그 우물 이름을 '적대의 우물' 이라고 지었다.22 이삭이 거기서 옮겨 또 다른 우물을 파자 그들이 더 이상 다투지 않았으므로 이삭은 그 우물 이름을 '넓은 우물' 이라고 짓고 “여호와께서 우리에게 넓은 장소를 주셨으니 이제는 우리가 번창할 것이다” 하고 말하였다.12 Isaac planted crops in that land. That same year he gathered 100 times more than he planted. That was because the Lord blessed him. 13 Isaac became rich. His wealth continued to grow until he became very rich. 14 He had many flocks and herds and servants. Isaac had so much that the Philistines became jealous of him. 15 So they stopped up all the wells the servants of his father Abraham had dug. They filled them with dirt.16 Then Abimelek said to Isaac, “Move away from us. You have become too powerful for us.”17 So Isaac moved away from there. He camped in the Valley of Gerar, where he made his home. 18 Isaac opened up the wells again. They had been dug in the time of his father Abraham. The Philistines had stopped them up after Abraham died. Isaac gave the wells the same names his father had given them.19 Isaac’s servants dug wells in the valley. There they discovered fresh water. 20 But the people of Gerar who took care of their own herds argued with the people who took care of Isaac’s herds. “The water is ours!” the people of Gerar said. So Isaac named the well Esek. That’s because they argued with him. 21 Then Isaac’s servants dug another well. They argued about that one too. So he named it Sitnah. 22 Isaac moved on from there and dug another well. But no one argued about that one. So he named it Rehoboth. He said, “Now the Lord has given us room. 하루 일곱번씩 주를 찬양하나이다Seven times a day I praise you! 이삭과 아비멜렉1 아브라함의 때에 있었던 것과 같은 흉년이 그 땅에 다시 들자 이삭은 블레셋 왕 아비멜렉이 사는 그랄로 갔다.2 그때 여호와께서 그에게 나타나 말씀하셨다. “너는 이집트로 내려가지 말고 내가 지시하는 대로 이 땅에 머물러 있거라.3 네가 이 땅에서 살면 내가 너와 함께하여 너를 축복하고 이 모든 땅을 너와 네 후손에게 주겠다. 내가 네 아버지 아브라함에게 약속한 것을 지켜4 네 후손들을 하늘의 별처럼 많게 하며 이 모든 땅을 그들에게 주겠다. 네 후손을 통해서 세상의 모든 민족이 복을 받을 것이다.5 이것은 아브라함이 나에게 순종하였고 나의 법과 명령을 지켰기 때문이다.”6 그래서 이삭은 그랄에서 살았다.7 그 곳 사람들이 그의 아내에 대해 물으면 그는 자기 아내를 누이동생이라고 하였다. 그가 이렇게 말한 것은 리브가가 아름다우므로 그 곳 사람들이 그녀를 탐내서 자기를 죽일지도 모른다고 생각했기 때문이었다.8 이삭은 그 곳에 오랫동안 살았는데 어느 날 이삭이 그의 아내 리브가를 껴안고 있는 것을 블레셋 왕 아비멜렉이 창문으로 보게 되었다.9 그래서 아비멜렉이 이삭을 불러 “그녀가 분명히 당신의 아내인데도 어째서 당신은 그녀를 누이동생이라고 하였소?” 하고 따져 물었다. 이삭이 그에게 “그녀를 내 아내라고 말하면 내가 죽음을 당하게 될 것이라고 생각했기 때문입니다” 하고 대답하자10 아비멜렉이 말하였다. “당신은 어째서 우리에게 이런 짓을 하였소? 하마터면 내 백성 중 하나가 당신 아내를 가까이하여 당신 때문에 우리가 죄를 지을 뻔하였소.”11 그러고서 아비멜렉은 모든 백성들에게 “이 사람과 그의 아내를 괴롭히는 자는 누구든지 죽음을 당할 것이다” 하고 경고하였다.Isaac and Abimelek1 There was very little food in the land. The same thing had been true earlier, in Abraham’s time. Isaac went to Abimelek in Gerar. Abimelek was the king of the Philistines. 2 The Lord appeared to Isaac and said, “Do not go down to Egypt. Live in the land where I tell you to live. 3 Stay there for a while. I will be with you and give you my blessing. I will give all these lands to you and your children after you. And I will keep my word that I gave to your father Abraham. 4 I will make your children after you as many as the stars in the sky. And I will give them all these lands. All nations on earth will be blessed because of your children. 5 I will do all these things because Abraham obeyed me. He did everything I required. He kept my commands, my rules and my instructions.” 6 So Isaac stayed in Gerar.7 The men of that place asked him about his wife. He said, “She’s my sister.” He was afraid to say, “She’s my wife.” He thought, “The men of this place might kill me because of Rebekah. She’s a beautiful woman.”8 Isaac had been there a long time. One day Abimelek, the king of the Philistines, looked down from a window. He saw Isaac hugging and kissing his wife Rebekah. 9 So Abimelek sent for Isaac. He said, “She’s really your wife, isn’t she? Why did you say she was your sister?”Isaac answered him, “I thought I might lose my life because of her.”10 Then Abimelek said, “What have you done to us? What if one of the men slept with your wife? Then you would have made us guilty.”11 So Abimelek gave orders to all the people. 하루 일곱번씩 주를 찬양하나이다Seven times a day I praise you! 야곱과 에서19 아브라함의 아들 이삭에 대한 이야기는 이렇다:20 이삭은 40세에 메소포타미아 출신의 아람 사람 브두엘의 딸이며 라반의 누이동생인 리브가와 결혼하였다.21 리브가가 아이를 낳지 못하여 이삭이 여호와께 기도하자 여호와께서 그 기도를 들어주셨다. 그래서 리브가가 임신하게 되었는데22 뱃속에서 아이들이 서로 싸우고 있었다. 리브가가 “어째서 나에게 이런 일이 있는가?” 하고 여호와께 물으러 가자23 여호와께서 그녀에게 이렇게 말씀하셨다. “두 국민이 네 뱃속에 있구나. 두 민족이 네 태중에서 나누어질 것이니 한 민족이 다른 민족보다 강할 것이며 형이 동생을 섬기리라.”24 해산하게 되었을 때 그녀의 태에는 쌍둥이가 있었다.25 먼저 나온 아이는 마치 털옷을 입은 것처럼 전신이 불그스름한 털로 덮여 있어서 그 이름을 '에서' 라 하였고26 나중에 나온 그의 동생은 손으로 에서의 발꿈치를 꽉 잡았으므로 그 이름을 '야곱' 이라고 하였다. 리브가가 그들을 낳았을 때 이삭은 60세였다.27 그 아이들이 자라 에서는 능숙한 사냥꾼이 되어 들을 좋아하였고 야곱은 조용한 사람이어서 집에 머물러 있기를 좋아하였다.28 이삭은 에서가 사냥해 온 고기를 좋아하였으므로 그를 사랑하였고 리브가는 야곱을 사랑하였다.Jacob and Esau19 Here is the story of the family line of Abraham’s son Isaac.Abraham was the father of Isaac. 20 Isaac was 40 years old when he married Rebekah. She was the daughter of Bethuel, the Aramean from Paddan Aram. She was also the sister of Laban, the Aramean.21 Rebekah couldn’t have children. So Isaac prayed to the Lord for her. And the Lord answered his prayer. His wife Rebekah became pregnant. 22 The babies struggled with each other inside her. She said, “Why is this happening to me?” So she went to ask the Lord what she should do.23 The Lord said to her,“Two nations are in your body.Two tribes that are now inside you will be separated.One nation will be stronger than the other.The older son will serve the younger one.”24 The time came for Rebekah to have her babies. There were twin boys in her body. 25 The first one to come out was red. His whole body was covered with hair. So they named him Esau. 26 Then his brother came out. His hand was holding onto Esau’s heel. So he was named Jacob. Isaac was 60 years old when Rebekah had them.27 The boys grew up. Esau became a skillful hunter. He liked the open country. But Jacob was content to stay at home among the tents. 28 Isaac liked the meat of wild animals. So Esau was his favorite son. 하루 일곱번씩 주를 찬양하나이다Seven times a day I praise you! 외아들을 바치는 아브라함1 그 후에 하나님이 아브라함을 시험하시려고 “아브라함아” 하고 부르 시자 그는 “내가 여기 있습니다” 하고 대답하였다.2 그때 여호와께서 아브라함에게 말씀하셨다. “너는 사랑하는 네 외아들 이삭을 데리고 모리아 땅으로 가 내가 지시하는 산에서 그를 나에게 제물로 바쳐라.”3 그래서 아브라함은 다음날 아침 일찍 일어나 나귀에 안장을 지우고 제물을 태울 나무를 준비하여 두 종과 자기 아들 이삭을 데리고 하나님이 지시하신 곳을 향해 떠났다.4 3일째에 아브라함이 멀리서 그 곳을 바라보고5 종들에게 말하였다. “너희는 나귀와 함께 여기 있거라. 내가 아들과 저기 가서 경배하고 오겠다.”6 그러고서 아브라함은 이삭에게 제물을 태울 나무를 가지고 가게 하고 자기는 불과 칼을 들고 갔는데 도중에7 이삭이 자기 아버지를 불렀다. “아버지!” “왜 그러느냐?” “불과 나무는 여기 있는데 제물로 바칠 어린 양은 어디 있습니까?”8 “얘야, 제물로 바칠 어린 양은 하나님이 직접 준비하실 것이다.” 그들이 계속 걸어서9 하나님이 지시하신 곳에 이르렀을 때 아브라함은 그 곳에 단을 쌓고 나무를 벌여 놓은 다음 자기 아들 이삭을 묶어 단의 나무 위에 올려놓았다.10 그리고 그가 손을 내밀어 칼을 잡고 자기 아들을 치려고 하는 순간11 여호와의 천사가 하늘에서 “아브라함아, 아브라함아” 하고 불렀다. 아브라함이 “내가 여기 있습니다” 하고 대답하자12 천사는 “그 아이에게 손을 대지 말아라. 그에게 아무 해도 입히지 말아라. 네가 하나밖에 없는 네 외아들까지 아끼지 않았으니 네가 하나님을 두려워하는 줄을 내가 이제야 알았다” 하고 말하였다.13 아브라함이 주위를 살펴보니 뒤에 숫양 한 마리가 있는데 뿔이 수풀에 걸려 있었다. 그래서 아브라함은 그 숫양을 가져다가 아들 대신 제물로 바쳤다.God Tests Abraham1 Some time later God tested Abraham. He said to him, “Abraham!”“Here I am,” Abraham replied.2 Then God said, “Take your son, your only son. He is the one you love. Take Isaac. Go to the place called Moriah. Give your son to me there as a burnt offering. Sacrifice him on the mountain I will show you.”3 Early the next morning Abraham got up and loaded his donkey. He took two of his servants and his son Isaac with him. He cut enough wood for the burnt offering. Then he started out for the place God had shown him. 4 On the third day Abraham saw the place a long way off. 5 He said to his servants, “Stay here with the donkey. I and the boy will go over there and worship. Then we’ll come back to you.”6 Abraham had his son Isaac carry the wood for the burnt offering. He himself carried the fire and the knife. And the two of them walked on together. 7 Then Isaac said to his father Abraham, “Father?”“Yes, my son?” Abraham replied.“The fire and wood are here,” Isaac said. “But where is the lamb for the burnt offering?”8 Abraham answered, “God himself will provide the lamb for the burnt offering, my son.” And the two of them walked on together.9 They reached the place God had shown Abraham. There Abraham built an altar. He arranged the wood on it. He tied up his son Isaac. Abraham placed him on the altar, on top of the wood. 10 Then he reached out his hand. He picked up the knife to kill his son. 11 But the angel of the Lord called out to him from heaven. He said, “Abraham! Abraham!”“Here I am,” Abraham replied.12 “Do not lay a hand on the boy,” he said. “Do not harm him. Now I know that you would do anything for God. You have not held back from me your son, your only son.”13 Abraham looked around. There in a bush he saw a ram caught by its horns. He went over and took the ram. 하루 일곱번씩 주를 찬양하나이다Seven times a day I praise you! 이삭의 출생1 여호와께서 약속하신 대로 사라에게 축복하셨으므로2 사라가 임신하여 하나님이 말씀하신 정한 때에 늙은 아브라함에게 아들을 낳아 주었다.3 아브라함은 그 아이 이름을 이삭이라고 지었으며4 이삭이 태어난 지 8일 만에 하나님이 명령하신 대로 자기 아들의 포피를 잘라 할례를 행하였다.5 이삭이 태어났을 때 아브라함은 100세였다.6 사라는 “하나님이 나를 웃게 하셨으니 이 일을 듣는 자가 다 나와 함께 웃을 것이다” 하며7 다시 이렇게 덧붙였다. “이 사라가 자식을 기를 것이라고 누가 꿈엔들 생각했겠는가? 그러나 나는 나이 많은 아브라함에게 아들을 낳아 주었다.”쫓겨나는 하갈과 이스마엘8 아이가 자라 젖을 떼는 날에 아브라함은 큰 잔치를 베풀었다.9 어느 날 사라가 보니 이집트 여인 하갈이 낳은 아브라함의 아들 이스마엘이 이삭을 조롱하고 있었다.10 그래서 그녀는 아브라함에게 “이 여종과 그 아들을 내쫓으세요. 이 여종의 아들은 내 아들 이삭과 함께 유산을 받을 수가 없습니다” 하였다.11 이스마엘도 자기 아들이었기 때문에 아브라함은 이 일로 몹시 근심하고 있었는데12 하나님이 그에게 이렇게 말씀하셨다. “그 아이나 네 여종에 대하여 근심하지 말고 사라가 너에게 말한 대로 하여라. 이삭을 통해서 난 사람이라야 네 후손으로 인정될 것이다.13 그리고 네 여종의 아들도 네가 낳은 자식이니 내가 그에게도 많은 후손을 주어 한 민족을 이루게 하겠다.”14 아브라함이 다음날 아침 일찍 일어나 빵과 물 한 가죽 부대를 가져다가 하갈의 어깨에 메어 주고 아들과 함께 내보내니 하갈이 그 곳을 떠나 브엘세바 광야에서 방황하였다.Isaac Is Born1 The Lord was gracious to Sarah, just as he had said he would be. The child was born at the exact time God had promised. 3 Abraham gave the name Isaac to the son Sarah had by him. 4 When his son Isaac was eight days old, Abraham circumcised him. He did it exactly as God had commanded him. 5 Abraham was 100 years old when his son Isaac was born to him.6 Sarah said, “God has given laughter to me. Everyone who hears about this will laugh with me.” 7 She also said, “Who would have said to Abraham that Sarah would breast-feed children? But I’ve had a son by him when he is old.”Abraham Sends Hagar and Ishmael Away8 Isaac grew. The time came for his mother to stop breast-feeding him. On that day Abraham prepared a big celebration. 9 But Sarah saw Ishmael making fun of Isaac. Ishmael was the son Hagar had by Abraham. Hagar was Sarah’s Egyptian slave. 10 Sarah said to Abraham, “Get rid of that slave woman! Get rid of her son! That woman’s son will never have a share of the family’s property. All of it belongs to my son Isaac.”11 What Sarah said upset Abraham very much. After all, Ishmael was his son. 12 But God said to Abraham, “Do not be so upset about the boy and your slave Hagar. Listen to what Sarah tells you, because your family line will continue through Isaac. 13 I will also make the son of your slave into a nation. I will do it because he is your child.”14 Early the next morning Abraham got some food and a bottle of water. The bottle was made out of animal skin. He gave the food and water to Hagar, placing them on her shoulders. Then he sent her away with the boy. 하루 일곱번씩 주를 찬양하나이다Seven times a day I praise you! 소돔을 위한 아브라함의 중재20 그리고 여호와께서 아브라함에게 말씀하셨다. “소돔과 고모라 사람들이 아주 악하여 큰 죄를 짓고 있다는 말이 들린다.21 이제 내가 내려가서 그것이 사실인지 알아보아야겠다.”22 그래서 두 사람은 계속 소돔을 향해 갔으나 여호와께서는 아브라함과 함께 그대로 머물러 계셨다.23 그때 아브라함이 여호와께 가까이 나아가 말하였다. “주께서 정말 의로운 사람을 악한 사람과 함께 멸망시키시겠습니까?24 만일 그 성에 50명의 의로운 사람이 있다면 어떻게 하시겠습니까? 그래도 그 성을 멸망시키시겠습니까, 아니면 50명의 그 의로운 사람을 생각해서 그 성을 용서하시겠습니까?25 주께서는 의로운 사람을 악인들과 함께 죽일 수는 없습니다. 어떻게 의로운 사람을 악한 사람과 같이 취급할 수 있습니까? 온 세상을 심판하시는 분이 그렇게 해서는 안 됩니다.”26 그러자 여호와께서 말씀하셨다. “만일 내가 소돔성에서 의로운 사람 50명을 찾을 수 있다면 그들을 생각해서 그 성을 용서하겠다.”27 “티끌과 같은 내가 감히 주께 말씀드립니다.28 만일 의로운 사람이 45명이라면 어떻게 하시겠습니까? 다섯 명이 부족하다고 해서 그 온 성을 멸망시키시겠습니까?” “내가 만일 의로운 사람 45명을 찾을 수 있다면 그 성을 멸망시키지 않겠다.”29 “만일 거기서 40명을 찾으시면 어떻게 하시겠습니까?” “내가 그 40명을 생각해서 그 성을 멸망시키지 않겠다.”30 “주여, 염치없이 말한다고 노하지 마소서. 만일 거기서 30명을 찾으신다면 어떻게 하시겠습니까?” “내가 거기서 30명을 찾아도 그 성을 멸망시키지 않겠다.”31 “내가 또 감히 주께 말씀드립니다. 거기서 20명을 찾으시면 어떻게 하시겠습니까?” “그 20명을 생각해서 내가 그 성을 멸망시키지 않겠다.”32 “주여, 노하지 마소서. 내가 한 번만 더 말씀드리겠습니다. 만일 그 성에서 의로운 사람 10명을 찾으신다면 어떻게 하시겠습니까?” “의로운 사람이 10명만 있어도 내가 그 성을 멸망시키지 않겠다.”33 여호와께서는 아브라함과 말씀을 마치신 후 즉시 떠나시고 아브라함은 자기 천막으로 돌아왔다.Abraham Pleads for Sodom20 The Lord also said, “The cries against Sodom and Gomorrah are very great. Their sin is so bad 21 that I will go down and see for myself. I want to see if what they have done is as bad as the cries that have reached me. If it is not, then I will know.”22 The men turned away and went toward Sodom. But Abraham remained standing in front of the Lord. 23 Then Abraham came up to him. He said, “Will you sweep away godly people along with those who are evil? 24 What if there are 50 godly people in the city? Will you really sweep it away? Won’t you spare the place because of the 50 godly people in it? 25 You would never kill godly people along with those who are evil, would you? Would you treat them all alike? You would never do anything like that! Won’t the Judge of the whole earth do what is right?”26 The Lord said, “If I find 50 godly people in the city of Sodom, I will spare it. I will spare the whole place because of them.”27 Then Abraham spoke up again. He said, “I have been very bold to speak to the Lord. After all, I’m only dust and ashes. 28 What if the number of godly people is five fewer than 50? Will you destroy the whole city because there are five fewer people?”“If I find 45 there,” he said, “I will not destroy it.”29 Once again Abraham spoke to him. He asked, “What if only 40 are found there?”He said, “If there are 40, I will not do it.”30 Then Abraham said, “Lord, please don’t be angry with me. Let me speak. What if only 30 can be found there?”He answered, “If I find 30, I will not do it.”31 Abraham said, “I have been very bold to speak to the Lord. What if only 20 can be found there?”He said, “If I find 20, I will not destroy it.”32 Then he said, “Lord, please don’t be angry with me. Let me speak just one more time. What if only ten can be found there?”He answered, “If I find ten, I will not destroy it.”33 When the Lord had finished speaking with Abraham, he left. He said, “I am the Mighty God. Walk faithfully with me. Live in a way that pleases me. 2 I will now act on my covenant between me and you. I will greatly increase the number of your children after you.”3 Abram fell with his face to the ground. God said to him, 4 “This is my covenant with you. You will be the father of many nations. 5 You will not be called Abram anymore. Your name will be Abraham, because I have made you a father of many nations. 6 I will greatly increase the number of your children after you. Nations and kings will come from you. 7 I will make my covenant with you last forever. It will be between me and you and your family after you for all time to come. I will be your God. And I will be the God of all your family after you. 8 You are now living in Canaan as an outsider. But I will give you the whole land of Canaan. You will own it forever and so will all your family after you. And I will be their God.”9 Then God said to Abraham, “You must keep my covenant. You and your family after you must keep it for all time to come. 10 Here is my covenant that you and your family after you must keep. The Lord said to him,“Abram, do not be afraid. I am like a shield to you. I am your very great reward.”2 But Abram said, “Lord and King, what can you give me? I still don’t have any children. My servant Eliezer comes from Damascus. When I die, he will get everything I own.” 3 Abram continued, “You haven’t given me any children. So this servant of mine will get everything I own.”4 Then a message from the Lord came to Abram. The Lord said, “When you die, what you have will not go to this man. You will have a son of your own. He will get everything you have.” 5 The Lord took Abram outside and said, “Look up at the sky. Count the stars, if you can.” Then he said to him, “That’s how many children will be born into your family.”6 Abram believed the Lord. The Lord was pleased with Abram because he believed. So Abram’s faith made him right with the Lord.7 He also said to Abram, “I am the Lord. I brought you out of Ur in the land of Babylon.
